New Mayors Gather at Harvard By Tom McClimon
Fifteen new and newly-elected mayors attended the "Seminar on Transition and Leadership for Newly Elected Mayors" held November 10-12 at Harvard University. This program sponsored by the U.S. Conference of Mayors and the Institute of Politics at the John F. Kennedy School of Government brought together newly-elected mayors with experienced mayors, Harvard faculty, and senior executives from public and private organizations to discuss issues that will be facing the new mayors as they assume office. Newly-elected mayors participating in the program were: Rocky Anderson, Salt Lake City; Robert Baines, Manchester; Michael Coleman, Columbus OH; Jack Ellis, Macon; Glenn Gilmore Hamilton, NJ; Dorothy Kelly Gay, Sommerville; Bernard Kincaid, Birmingham; Russell Lloyd, Evansville; David Madden, Weymouth; Martin O'Malley, Baltimore; Bart Peterson, Indianapolis; William Purcell, Nashville; Graham Richard, Fort Wayne; Don Wesely, Lincoln; and Anthony Williams, Washington, D.C. Many of the Conference of Mayors leadership officials served as faculty for the seminar. Gary Mayor Scott King and Cedar Rapids Mayor Lee Clancey lead the discussion on "Transitioning from the Campaign to City Hall." Fort Wayne Mayor and Past Conference President Paul Helmke gave the keynote address at the opening dinner and participated in the "Policing, Crime and Violence" session. Providence Mayor Vincent Cianci served as a faculty member for the "Business and Government" session and Knoxville Mayor and Past Conference President Victor Ashe participated with Conference Executive Director J. Thomas Cochran in the "Intergovernmental Affairs" session. Dearborn Mayor Michael Guido served as a panelist on the "Cities 2000: Citizenship On-Line" session and District of Columbia Mayor Anthony Williams lead the discussion on "Financing the City." Boston Mayor Thomas Menino and Chattanooga Mayo Jon Kinsey gave presentations on "Creating a More Livable City" while Stamford Mayor Dannel Malloy participated in the "Issues in Urban Education" session. In addition to the issues sessions the newly-elected mayors participated in an "Election 2000 Forum" with James Carville, Senior Adviser to the President and Democratic Political Strategist and Dan Lungren, former Attorney General of California and California GOP Gubernatorial Candidate. The mayors also attended a dinner at the John F. Kennedy Presidential Library. |
